According to Census 2000 data, Virginia Asian Americans have the highest college degree attainment rate, rates of having an advanced degree (professional or Ph.D.), and working in professional, scientific, engineering, technical, or upper management occupations. This achivement record was part of the reason why the state of Virginia was voted the seventh (7th) "Smartest States" by the Morgan Quitno's annual "Education State Rankings" in 2006.
Per Census 2000, 49 percent of Virginian Asians, age 25 and older, have a bachelor's degree or higher level of education.
Asians have the highest proportion of college graduates of any race or ethnic group in Virginia and the country.
87 percent of Virginian Asians, age 25 and older, are high school graduates.
20 percent of Asians who are 25 years and older have an advanced degree (e.g., Master's, Ph.D., M.D. or J.D.).
68 percent of Asian Indians for exemple, age 25 and older, had a bachelor's degree or more education and 37 percent had a graduate or professional degree.
Another exemple is 24 percent of Vietnamese-Americans had a bachelor's degree or more education and 7 percent had a graduate or professional degree.
In general, Asian foreign born Virginian students have a special reverence for teachers, whom they often address with great respect and loyalty. Such attitudes translate into sterling academic performance. Asian youngsters excel in sciences, mathematics, engineering, medical/medicine, management, and business, which are academic courses promising most secure professional careers. This is largely due to both schooling from their native primary and secondary education, family business tradition, and parental encouragement. This is shown in the following data:
